How Long Should an Oil Change Take If I Do It Myself?

When performing an oil change on your own, the amount of time it takes can vary. Set aside at least an hour to take care of everything for your oil change. But it can take more or less than that. Keep in mind, you’ll need to set aside time and money to purchase at least 5 quarts or more of new oil, a new oil filter, a new oil filter gasket, a rubber mallet, correctly sized wrenches, a jack to keep your vehicle raised, and wheel blocks to prevent your vehicle from rolling.

You may find it takes less time and costs less to bring your vehicle into a dealership like Mitch Smith Chevrolet, Inc. when it’s time to replace your vehicle’s oil. If you’ve got a busy schedule, bringing your vehicle into our service department can give you more time in your week. It’s also less of a headache to let our expert technicians handle an oil change because we’ve been doing this as a dealership since 1976.

More Chevy Oil Change Information

You might think you need an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months. But that’s no longer the case. New vehicles and used vehicles made in the past five years or so have well-built engines to go along with synthetic motor oil to keep parts lubricated. New vehicles need oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, especially if you go with synthetic versus conventional oil. In fact, some models can even go 10,000 miles between oil changes. Check your owner’s manual, oil life monitor (OLM) system, or driver’s information screen on your car, truck, or SUV to see the specific oil change interval.
